The City of Marion is announcing that detours in the downtown Marion area will get underway at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, September 3 to accommodate activities for the upcoming Marion Popcorn Festival, being held September 5 - 7.  Streets will remain closed until the festival’s conclusion on Saturday and may remain closed into the early hours of Sunday, September 8 for festival clean-up.  Detours during the festival will occur for the following streets:

  • Center St. between State St. and Campbell St.
  • Church St. between Main St. and Prospect St.
  • Main St. between Huber St. and Church St.
  • Prospect St. between George St. and Church St.
  • Oak St. between Huber St. and Center St.

In preparation for and during the Popcorn Parade, the closure of several area streets will occur on Thursday, September 5.  The following streets will be closed in the section noted beginning at approximately 5:00 pm and remain closed until parade units have cleared the street:

  • Forest Lawn Blvd. (closed from E. Center St. to Mt. Vernon Ave.)
  • Chicago Ave. (closed between E. Center St. and Wilson Ave.)
  • Johnson St. (closed between E. Center St. and Wilson Ave.)
  • Boone Ave. (closed between E. Center St. and Wilson Ave.)
  • Pennsylvania Ave. (closed between E. Center St. and E. Church St.)
  • Kenmore Ave. (closed between E. Center St. and E. Church St.)

The following streets will be closed until the conclusion of the parade:

  • East Center St. between Merchant St. and State St. (closing at approximately 5:00 pm.)
  • S. State St. between Center St. and Columbia St.
  • S. Vine St.  between Center St. and Church St./Mt. Vernon Ave.
  • E. Church St. between State St. and Vine St.
  • S. High St. between Center St. and Church St.
  • S. Greenwood St. between Center St. and Mt. Vernon Ave.

Due to the various street closures that will take place in preparation of the Popcorn Festival Parade, Marion Area Transit will be making final pick-ups at 2:00 pm, with final drop-offs scheduled for 2:30 pm on Thursday, September 5. Normal operating hours will resume on Friday, September 6.

 

Updates: 

Mayor Bill Collins is announcing the following closures for the City of Marion offices and departments on Monday, September 2, 2024 in observance of the Labor Day holiday:

  • All offices in City Hall will be closed.
  • Sanitation crews will not work on Monday, September 2.  Residents that normally have Monday sanitation service are asked to have their collections at curbside by 7:00 am on Tuesday, September 3.  Sanitation crews will collect both Monday and Tuesday’s refuse on Tuesday, with the possibility that some of Tuesday’s collection could extend into Wednesday.
  • Marion Area Transit buses will not operate on Monday, September 2.  Normal bus service will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
  • Marion Senior Center will be closed on Monday, September 2.  No senior transportation will be available that day with the exception of dialysis appointments. 

Necessary services including fire, police, and airport will operate as usual.

Offices in Marion City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day (“Juneteenth”).  Legislation established “Juneteenth” as a federal holiday in June 2021.

The following departments for the City of Marion will operate as noted below on Wednesday, June 19, 2024:

  • Sanitation crews will collect garbage and recycling on Wednesday, June 19. Residents who normally have refuse collected on Wednesday are requested to have their collections at curbside by 7:00 a.m.
  • Buses for Marion Area Transit will NOT be in operation on Wednesday, June 19. Normal hours of operation will resume on Thursday, June 20.
  • Marion Senior Center will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. No senior transportation will be available that day with the exception of dialysis appointments.
