Council Committees and Commissions

Marion City Council Committee Meetings are held every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at Marion City Hall, Courtroom Number One, 2nd Floor, 233 West Center Street, Marion, Ohio 43301-1802.


Finance Committee   

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and other matters relating to finances, indebtedness appropriations, the payment of moneys not provided for by previous legislation, taxation and all matters pertaining to the City Auditor's office, the standardization of salaries and wages and the sale or purchase of real estate.  (See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (1) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

Streets & Sewers Committee

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and other matters pertaining to the construction, repair, maintenance, inspection, cleaning improvement, assessment and vacations of streets, alleys and sidewalks, and matters relating to that area between the curb line and the private property line, and all matters pertaining to traffic regulation and to the sewage disposal system and to the construction, repair, maintenance, inspection, cleaning, improvement, assessment, vacation and cross-connections of storm and sanitary sewers.  (See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (2) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

Public Utilities Committee

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and other matters pertaining to rates to be paid by the municipality to any public utility for street lighting or other utility services and to existing or proposed franchises with any public utility, including CATV, bus and taxicab operations. Municipal Services, Parks & Recreation 

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolution and other matters relating to the Public Safety/Service Department, Police Division, Fire Division, Health Board, workmen's compensation, employee's relations, civil service and civil defense and other matters relating to the parks and recreation.  See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (4) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

Legislation, Codes & Regulations

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and other matters pertaining to County, State or Federal legislation affecting the City; rules apportionment; redistricting; all initiative, referendum and recall petitions; all matters relating to courts; enforcement ordinance imposing fines penalties forfeiture or imprisonment; and civil rights and other matters relating to curfew liquor permits obscenity, air pollution, water pollution, building codes housing codes plumbing codes, slum clearance dangerous buildings and excavations, subdivision regulations, weeds, noise, signs, peddlers, solicitors, junk yards, fortune tellers, advertising, coin-operated devices, entertainment, bingo, lotteries and other matters relating to the regulation of lands, buildings, businesses, professions and persons.  See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (5) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

Airport, Lands, & Buildings

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and other matters pertaining to all public buildings and grounds owned, leased or operated by the municipality, including parking lots, and all ordinances, resolutions and other matters relating to the Marion Municipal Airport.  See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (6) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

For the purpose of assisting Council and the Director of Public Service, there is created a Board of Airport Commissioners which shall consist of five persons: one of whom shall be a non-voting member of Council.  Traditionally, that appointee is the chairperson of Airport, Lands, & Buildings or designee.

Zoning & Annexation

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and other matters pertaining to zoning and annexation. See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (7) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

Jobs & Economic Development

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and all other matters relating to industrial and economic development of the municipality, present jobs and future employment opportunities. See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (8) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

Information Systems

Shall be referred all ordinances, resolutions and other matters relating to information systems, computer networks, computer issues, telephone issues, and those other matters related to any electronic media not already referred to any other standing committee.

Select Committee -- Charter City

Regional Planning Commission

Shall be council's appointees to the Marion City/Marion County Planning Commission.  See Rules of Council, Section 111.03 (9) Committees of Council as found in the Marion City Codified Ordinances)

  • Regional Planning Commission Meetings are open to the the public are held at 7PM located in the Prospect Room, lower level of Marion County Building on 4th Wednesday of the month, except November and December meetings are combined due to holiday season and held on 2nd Wednesday of December. Meetings could be cancelled due to lack of business. Prior notification will be given. Meeting Schedule

Traffic Commission

It shall be the duty of the Traffic Commission to establish and maintain a master traffic control plan for the municipality concerning recommended width of streets, designation and location of through streets, stop streets, one-way streets, no-parking areas, the location and erection of traffic control signals, stop signs, no-parking signs, one-way street signs, fire lane signs and similar appropriate controls and other matters related to traffic flow and control, to coordinate traffic activities, to carry on educational activities in traffic matters, to supervise the preparation and publication of traffic reports, to receive complaints having to do with traffic matters and to recommend to Council and to the Safety/Service Director and other city official ways and means for improving traffic conditions and the administration and enforcement of traffic regulations.
