Mayor Scott Schertzer is announcing the following closings and adjusted hours for City Offices during the weeks of December 21 and December 28:

City Hall - Many departments in City Hall will be utilizing vacation time over the holiday period of December 24 - 25 and December 31 - January 1.  Therefore, residents are highly encouraged to call and ensure the office relevant to their needs will be open.  All offices will be closed on December 25 and January 1.  Click here for a complete list of business hours for each department  in City Hall for the weeks of December 21 and December 28.

Sanitation - Sanitation collection will not take place on December 25 or January 1.  Residents with Friday sanitation service are asked to have their collections at curbside by 7:00 am on Monday, December 28 and Monday, January 4.  Crews will collect both Friday and Monday’s refuse on each Monday.  Sanitation crews will also begin collecting live Christmas trees on Monday, December 28 and continue tree collection through the month of January.  Live Christmas trees should be placed at curbside on the resident’s trash collection day. All lights and decorations should be removed from the tree and the tree should NOT be wrapped in plastic, as City crews will chip the trees at curbside.

Marion Area Transit - Marion Area Transit will close at 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 24 and will remain closed through Friday, December 25.  On Thursday, December 31, Marion Area Transit will observe normal operating hours and will then be closed on Friday, January 1.

Senior Center - The Marion Senior Center will be closed on December 24 - 25, as well as December 31 - January 1.

Necessary services including police and fire will operate as usual.

Updates:

As a reminder, the final week for the City of Marion's 2015 curbside yard waste and leaf collection is December 7-11.

The three options for disposal of leaves by city residents are:

  1. Place leaves in the tree lawn area to be vacuumed.

A vacuum-type collector will collect leaves raked to the tree lawn area, with each street having leaves collected during the leaf pick-up season.

As a note, residents should NOT rake leaves into the street in order to keep from blocking catch basins and drains, so water can drain properly into the city’s storm sewer system.

  2. Place leaves in biodegradable paper bags for City pick up, which will follow yard waste limits of a pick-up of 3 bags per week.

Residents wishing to bag leaves may do so by placing them in clearly marked biodegradable paper bags sold at local retail stores.  The filled bags should be placed at curbside for pick-up.  The City will continue to follow its yard waste limits of collecting 3 bags and 3 bundles per residence per week.

  3. Take biodegradable paper bagged leaves to 560 Barks Rd. W.

Park Enterprise Construction located at 560 Barks Rd. W. is the location of the City’s free drop off site.  This location will be open to city residents free of charge.  Residents may call 223-7275 for Park Enterprise hours of operation.  Proof of city residency may be required.  PLEASE NOTE:  If non-biodegradable bags are used, leaves must be emptied from the bag at site.

For additional information, contact the Sanitation/Streets Department at 382-1479.
