Stormwater Tips for Residents
Be part of the solution to reduce storm water pollution!
- When walking your pet, pick up the waste and dispose of properly. Flush if possible. Leaving pet waste on the ground increases health risks by allowing bacteria to enter storm drain and local water bodies.
- Drain your pool or spa only when a test kit does not detect chlorine levels. When possible, drain into the sanitary sewer system. Store chemicals in a covered area to prevent leaks and spills and to avoid exposure to storm water.
- If you are on a septic system, have your system inspected by a professional at least every 3 years and pumped out as necessary.
- Before beginning an outdoor project, locate nearest storm drain and protect it from debris.
- Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly. Avoid application when rain is in forecast, as chemicals will be washed into local streams.
- Recycle used oil and other automotive fluids at participating facilities. Do not dump down the drain or dispose of in the trash.
- Keep vehicles in good repair. Check frequently for oil leaks and spills. Clean up spilled fluids with absorbents like kitty litter or sand and properly dispose of material. Do not rinse the spills into a nearby storm drain.
- Sweep up yard waste for proper disposal. Compost or recycle yard waste whenever possible. Keep leaves, grass, and other debris out of catch basins.
- Use commercial carwashes, or wash car on a lawn or other unpaved surface to minimize the amount of dirty, soapy water running off into the storm drains.
- Remember only RAIN down the storm drain. Anything that enters a storm sewer is discharged untreated into the water bodies we use for swimming, fishing, and drinking water.
- Report violations to Water Pollution Control.
